Three things I learned about Aperture:
1) the aperture of an optical system is the opening that determines the cone angle of a bundle of rays that come to a focus in the image plane.
2) The Diaphragm acts similar to the Iris of the eye and controls the aperture.
3) Reducing the aperture size increases the depth of field.

Very good. #2 is a good illustration of how the aperture works. If your iris did not get smaller when outside in bright light, your brain would be over exposed, and that would be painful.
